ERGA’s commitment to the rehabilitation of closed sites includes the reforesting of the former Kabolela Mine at Boss Mining. In over 19 months, more than 25 000 plants were introduced. This is an impressive feat indeed, and the newly established Luitaville Nursery is gearing up to supply more for the next rainy season.
The rehabilitation programme started with the establishment of this nursery in January 2017, and today more than 9 700 plants are available.
In accordance with the mining law, rehabilitation must been done with indigenous plants found within a radius of around 80km from the rehabilitated site. As not all plants have the capability to grow in a degraded environment, the experimental phase started with earmarked plants from identified zones in Kabolela.
